Exciting Programme both Individually and as a School Team
Since September 2008, Sixth Form students at St. Dominic’s Brewood have been given the opportunity to take part the Young Enterprise Company Programme. We have achieved huge successes from this exciting programme both individually and as a school team.
The Young Enterprise Programme allows students to set up and run their own company. They elect a board of directors from amongst their peers, raise share capital, market and finance a product or service of their own choice. Y.E. companies present a report and accounts to their shareholders. Students then compete against thousands of other schools, successful entries going on to compete at regional, national and eventually at international level.
Personal successes and outcomes:
The first Y.E. team from St. Dominic’s High School for Girls consisted of 11 sixth form girls who created a company called ‘DUO’. They developed and manufactured the ‘QUILLOW’, a pillow which also folds out into a quilt. The girls had great success with the ‘QUILLOW’, reaching the county finals and only narrowly missing out on winning overall.
Lauren Prema gained sponsorship throughout her University studies, paid work experience and a guaranteed job when she graduates! This is from the company Areva (now Alstom and Schneider) as a consequence of her involvement with the Y.E. scheme and her success as Managing Director of her team ‘Duo’.
Similarly, the Managing Director of the successful company ‘Felicitas’ got her team to National Finals. Obviously this was a huge team effort and the Managing Director was also personally selected to be the student representative on the local Y.E. board as a consequence of this huge success.
The `Write` product saw the girls produce brand new children books that became number 1 on Amazon for the UK and America. This product was so successful, the girls went to the National Finals at the British film institute in London and being interviewed on BBC Breakfast television. Their product enabled many business contacts and University places and links as well as winning the best retail award.
